Hi

I'm more inclined (no pun) to gate_pier as that's the HE
language and a quick google query shows many companies offering
them - that leads me to think it is in widespread use and is part
of the language of gates. The google search for gate_post shows
less substantial posts. This leads me to identify a clear
difference between gate_pier and gate_post, the former being more
substantial in form and function.

I found a company offering both gate posts and gate piers. The distinction they seemed to be making was between one-piece and sectional pillars. I'm not sure if that's the common distinction but, now I think about it, seems to fit with the use of post in other circumstances. However, like Jerry I wonder if it would be helpful to only use one at the top level.
