AIUI, the appellation of a vineyard isn't unique. A vineyard might sell
its better wines as AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but some lesser ones as AOC
Côtes du Rhône.

It is very true that a winery might sell wine from multiple sources of grapes. But a grape grown in a vineyard located in a specific AVA should carry that designation. The wine bottle would only contain that specific appellation if all the grapes were from that appellation.
