<div dir="ltr"><div>First, post boxes do go out of commission temporarily for various reasons. Snails eating the post is one I've seen. Some, just dont work in a given location, like <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1018817841">this one</a> mapped by Gregory Marler, which has been a zombie post box for a lot longer than it was a post box.</div><div><br></div><div>Secondly, there are a number of historically significant post boxes which are no longer in use. Two which come to mind are the <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1574742829">Air Mail box</a> outside Windsor Castle & <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/416856132">the one</a> which was bombed by suffragettes pre-WW1 in Hampstead.</div><div><br></div><div>In all these cases the fact that you can't post letters there was rather obscured, so I've updated them to disused:amenity. The downside is that someone may see them not rendered & try and add them again (which may be why I used disused=yes for the Windsor one in the first place).</div><div><br></div><div>Jerry<br></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Sun, 5 Dec 2021 at 18:23, Mat Attlee <<a href="mailto:mattattlee@gmail.com">mattattlee@gmail.com</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr"><div>I've noticed several disused mail boxes around Hackney that either have had their reference and collection times removed, had the letter slot taped over or had a sign indicating they were closed. Is it best practice to mark them as disused:amenity=post_box? eg <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/114580835" target="_blank">https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/114580835</a></div></div>
