As per Andy "Sam Smith's are the direct operator of all of their
pubs" but in general perhaps care needs taking with pubs as they
are frequently operated on a franchisee system, the operator is
the landlord as a person or company not the beer provider IMHO. Cf
petrol stations (look at the receipt) and buses (network=Metro but
operator=First Accenture Ribena Stagecoach or whatever ever call
themselves today). Brand is safer methinks.

Interesting question. Sam Smith's tend to be quiet, in
terms of pub frontage/signage, that they're the operator
(though it's obvious once you're inside) so I wouldn't say
they "brand" their pubs. Contrast with, say, Wetherspoons,
who always appear to declare they're a "Wetherspoons Free
House" before you enter. Both are operators without doubt,
but are they both brands?

Sam Smith's are the direct operator of all of their pubs (and
it is arguably also the "brand", since they are pretty
consistent outside as well as in*). I believe that the last Sam
Smith's pub not run directly by the brewery was The Ebor in
Bishopthorpe near York (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"

), but when the previous landlord died (during the first Covid
wave) it closed, and the word locally was that the company was
looking for a manager.
