Hi,

The tag seems to largely belong to the early days of OSM. The majority of usage in the UK is an an area of Northamptonshire where User Ben was one of the first mappers to add a lot of detail in their local area.(around Towcester). Elsewhere, it's been used a bit around Norwich and in the Lake District near Keswick, and for a canal tunnel.

On the whole I suspect it is a bit subjective as a tag, and originally pre-dated availability of any imagery. I'd probably prefer width as a tag as this can now be measured with reasonable accuracy (0.25-0.5 m) on a lot of aerial imagery. Other aspects which may add to the value as well as width are the nature of the highway corridor. A narrow asphalt road with grass verges is a different proposition from one with no verges and dry-stone walls on either side.

Jerry

On Mon, 16 Jan 2023 at 08:08, Satoshi IIDA <nyampire@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello.

I would like to know more about the tag "passing=*".
It seems that the tags passing=difficult and passing=caution seem to be commonly used in the UK, but I could find no documentation on the OSM wiki.

https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/passing#values

I would like to know what their meaning of them is.
Would you happen to know anything about it?

## Background
I am a mapper, editing in Japan.
In the OSM, it is recommended to use `lanes=1` for these 1.5-lane ways.
However, this does not express that it is possible to pass each other.

Therefore, we would like to know more about the tag `passing=*`.
If values such as `passing=yes/no/others` are available, we think that roads with `lanes=1.5` in Japan could be replaced by tags such as the following.

https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=35.455479836101&lng=137.4147767667&z=17&pKey=364117255720380&focus=photo
lanes=1
passing=yes
(width=5.8)
(width:lanes=3.1)
(oneway=no)

https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=35.464347638202&lng=137.4251362123&z=17&pKey=393768719177067&focus=photo&x=0.4932036975244724&y=0.578707555164132&zoom=0
lanes=1
passing=yes
passing:hgv=no
(width=4.4)
(width:lanes=3.6)
(oneway=no)

It seems the tags `passing=difficult` and `passing=caution` are already in use in the UK, but I could not find documentation about `passing=*` in the OSM wiki, so I am not sure in what situations it means.

https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/passing#values

We would appreciate it if we could find out the situation of the tag being applied.

Best regards

--

Satoshi IIDA
mail: nyampire@gmail.com
twitter: @nyampire
