<p>Hi Mayuresh,</p>
<p>I started with a Garmin long back( around 10 years), Bought with
Europe map, So I used it with OSM maps
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin">https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin</a>) thus came
to know about OSM, started mapping.</p>
That Garmin was not very accurate (I have to correct most of those
roads later). After 2-3 years later some smartphones came with
better(<10m) accuracy like samsung galaxy or 1+1(without net/sim
in flight mode all times, file copy through USB). <br>
<p>Recently I felt dual frequency GNSS like 1+7Pro etc have less
error-- I don't own one so I cannot say for sure. This is the
reason I suggested smartphone, I also use feature phone
mostly(smart phone GPS for mapping).</p>
<p> One of my requirement is to map newly constructed 4 lines(from
2 lines) highways with good accuracy also chicanes(speed barriers
) and humps placed in highways ---this need accuracy in 2-3m as I
cannot map while driving. My current devices does not support this
accuracy.</p>
<p>Most probably Garmin would have improved a lot. But the
specification does not say much just "<span class="a-list-item"><span
class="a-size-base">high-sensitivity receiver", they don't
mention dual frequency or accuracy. <br>
</span></span></p>
<p><span class="a-list-item"><span class="a-size-base">Please let me
know your experience with Garmin. Even I am also thinking of
buying one at some point :), for the same reason.<br>
</span></span></p>
<p><span class="a-list-item"><span class="a-size-base">Regards</span></span></p>

<pre class="moz-quote-pre" wrap="">Hi Sunil,
For starters, I am wary of all cell phones, I only tolerate my feature phone because I it to receive OTP messages while transacting via websites.
Secondly, the GPS functionality found in most smartphones is sub-standard when compared with a dedicated GPS receiver.

<pre class="moz-quote-pre" wrap="">Hi Mayuresh,
Why not use a old smart phone (But with good GPS- eg, 1+ 7 or later with
Dual-frequency GNSS) also with lineage support
<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices">"https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices"</a>. switch on the phone only when
required. no SIM, no WIFI always in flight mode.
Any apk download from fdroid in your ubuntu box. transfer through USB
pen drive. Use OSM tracker to track paths or any POIs, you can also use
OSMAND also. Similarly .gpx files transfer once in a while. Update OSM
from ubuntu using Josm.
Never connect the phone to any network!. If you wanted you can remove
microphone(needed help from some repair guy), cameras you can put
tapes. If you can remove antenna connection ---not sure it is possible
--it is better :).
Phone needed USB support and Micro phone port, in case you want record
audio.
I hope mostly it should be secure.
Regards
Sunil

<pre class="moz-quote-pre" wrap="">I don't own a smartphone, and probably never will, I don't trust them.
I live in an area of Mumbai Suburbs which is now coming-up in a big way and hence there is lots of fresh information that could be fed into OSM.
My primary work environment is Ubuntu desktop and I solicit information about equipment (which works with such a configuration) I could purchase (other than any smartphone) to help me with the process of pinpointing locations and adding-in meta-data to OSM.
Thank you.
