I was using this as an example. The need for direct
attribution is stated explicitly in the licensing texts
coming with the data, and is also central to the CC-BY
license (that's the BY in it) - I don't really believe that
the method you propose - to simpy put them on the
contributors page - is sufficient. OSM has to be very
careful about these things! We can't afford to have legal
trouble with government bodies. Are you certain about this
issue?<br>

Any lawyers out there who can help?<br>

<div>Due to the fact we have a online database and not a printed
map, my <b>opinion</b> is that we have to communicate the
statement with the same modality of the data: online. So the
"contributors" page is enough, like in the rest of the world.</div>
<div> </div>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>In any case, I'm not a lawyer too, but I think we don't need
a lawyer to solve this problem: I'm simply mailing to the
geoportale's people to ask them if this is OK (like for all
others contributors) or not.</div>

<div>I'll forward to the list the reply (if there's one, of course

Thank you for bringing the matter forward. For data which can be
used by OSM already, I have had a look at<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IT:Potential_Datasources">http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IT:Potential_Datasources</a><br>
<br>
and my impression was that permission needs to be granted to use
such data at all, and the permission will also specify which use OSM
can make of the data - i.e. import them or only retrace them. No
piemontese data are mentioned there. When I looked at the italian
section of the international datasources wiki page<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potential_Datasources#Italy">http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potential_Datasources#Italy</a><br>
<br>
I found this section on data from the regione piemonte (note the
last sentence):<br>
<br>
********* begin quote<br>
<br>
<h4> <span class="mw-headline" id="Regione_Piemonte">Regione
Piemonte</span></h4>
<p>The Regione Piemonte has put data from their stock online at <a
href="http://www.dati.piemonte.it/" class="external autonumber"
rel="nofollow">[12]</a> These include a detailed DEM and the
CTRN for the whole of Piemonte down to 1:10000 resolution. Some of
the data are quite old, but potentially still extremely useful
(e.g. for streams, toponyms). The data are under various CC
licenses. No permission to use the data in OSM has yet been
requested or given.
</p>
<h4> <span class="mw-headline" id="Regione_Toscana"> </span>**********
end quote</h4>
So this is why I think OSM can't use the data (yet). Gaining
permission would be a great success. Good luck!<br>
