<div dir="ltr">Dear Andy,<div>I was the first to suggest the possibility of adding the local names to the map, at the time of the "Google Maps secession" (<a href="http://daily.wired.it/news/internet/2013/10/11/secessione-sardegna-google-maps-nomi-citta-paesi-546536.html">http://daily.wired.it/news/internet/2013/10/11/secessione-sardegna-google-maps-nomi-citta-paesi-546536.html</a>). First I added the names of the municipalities in the name:sc tag to make a custom rendering (tried with maperitive), then some time after people started changing to the double language version, and the situatiion was at piece until a new Victor Amadeus II, king of Sicily (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Amadeus_II_of_Sardinia">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Amadeus_II_of_Sardinia</a>), came and decreed to actually use the italian - I see this comparison more fit than applying immediately Godwin's Law,-,</div><div><br></div><div>I would have preferred to spend my time doing some other contributions, but now I see it's time to make 'our' map somewhere else (actually it's another rendering, but I need to setup again the vector tiles toolchain I broke, meh).</div><div><br></div><div>Best,</div><div>Stefano</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV2ViNJFZC8">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV2ViNJFZC8</a> (le me walking out)<br></div><div><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">2016-09-03 9:23 GMT+02:00 Andrea Zedda <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:andreazedda80@gmail.com" target="_blank">andreazedda80@gmail.com</a>></span>:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><p dir="ltr">OK, it's obvious that sardinian osm community lost this shitty edit war. I think its beyond _verging_ on the ridiculous. Cagliari (or
Casteddu/Cagliari if you prefer) is now up to version 57. Changing
it backwards and forwards doesn't help anyone - it just causes
confusion.<br>
<br>
It's clear that the majority (just) of people who've expressed an
opinion on the Italian list are in favour of "name=The Italian Name"
(although the numbers I when I counted last night didn't quite agree
with Fayor's from a couple of days ago), and it's clear that the
majority of people who've expressed an opinion on the Sardinian list
are in favour o f"name=Sardinian / Italian". It's also pretty clear
that there's not really any room for negotiation between the two
sides - you can't have "half a name" in a name tag.<br>
<br>
Given that Nominatim can already find both name:it and name:sc names
already, and data consumers such as OsmAnd are already free to use
"language" names, the issue seems to be about the "standard map
layer". It's not feasible at this time to have multiple language
layers there, but it would be possible to create a very similar map
for a particular language community using either Sardinian, Italian
or whatever other language was needed. The size of Italy in OSM
would mean that a huge rendering server wouldn't be needed; just
Sardinia would be even less. If someone would like some help in
setting up a "switch2osm"(1) style server that renders either
"name:sc" or "name:it" (where they exist) in preference to "name",
let me know.<br>
<br>
Please don't, however, continue to change placenames continually
between "Italian" and "Sardinian / Italian" variants. People have
already been temporarily blocked for doing that and if the
"Rubamazzetto" continues it'll happen again. If "someone has to
make a decision" it might be a decision that neither side likes
(removing all "name" tags but leaving "name:it" and "name:sc").<br>
