이 글이 결코 문화 사이의 차별이나 독선적 문화우월주의 같은 걸 건드리기 위함이 아니라 모든 문화, 모든 언어권이 존중받아야 한다는 뜻임을 먼저 밝히고자 합니다.</p>
<p>세상이 주로 영어 중심으로 돌아가고 이 곳 OSM 사랑방 역시 그렇고, 우리는 우리말글(한말글)의 울타리에 갇혀 있는것 같습니다.<br>
OSM 위키의 서술에도 서양 중심적인 내용이 많은 것 같다는 얘기는 이미 여러번 했습니다만, 지금 일어나고 있는 논의에 있어서도 여전히 그 틀을 벗어나지 못하고 있다는 생각입니다.</p>
<p>보기를 들어서, (영어를 뺀!)특정 언어와 특정 지역 카테고리를 가진 사람들은 거의 모든 논의를 그 지역 카테고리 안에서만 하게 됩니다. 그것이 설령 세계 공통적인 주제라고 하더라도…<br>
반면에 영어를 쓰는 사람들은 설령 조금 지역적인 문제까지도 ‘<a href="https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/general/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">General talk</a>’ 갈래[category]에서 광범위하게 논의를 합니다.<br>
그런 과정 때문에 'General talk’에서 논의된 것은 거의 공식적인 논의인 것처럼 되고, 지역 카테고리에서 논의된 것은 딱히 지역 카테고리 바깥의 모두와 공유가 되지 못하고 있는 실정이라고 봅니다.<br>
이런 문제를 풀어보고자 의견을 낸 적이 있으나 제 짧은 영어 실력 때문에 제대로 뜻이 전달되지 못하고, 그저 ‘단순한 불편함’ 정도로 받아들여지는 것 같아 안타깝습니다.</p>
<p>이 문제는 비단 우리(‘한국/조선’ 카테고리 안) 뿐만 아니라 비영어권, 비서양권 모두에게 해당하는 문제이고 두고두고 풀어야 할 문제라고 생각합니다.<br>
저는 먼저 이 카테고리를 들어오시는 분들부터 이런 문제에 대해 인식을 해 주셨으면 좋겠고, 우리가 먼저 해결책을 찾고 해결을 요구해야 한다고 생각합니다.</p>
<p>얼마전 우연히 이런 얘기를 들었습니다.<br>
미국 가정에 흔히 걸려있는 액자에 적혀 있는 글귀가 있는데(말하자면 옛날에 우리나라 가정에 '가회만사성’이나 가훈 같은 게
걸려있던 것과 비슷한 것 같습니다.) 바로 “존중받을 것을 기대하라”(Expect to be respected)라는 말이라고
합니다.<br>
무슨 뜻인가 하면, 스스로가 존중받을 만한 자격이 있는 사람임을 인식하고 그렇게 요구하라는 뜻이라고 합니다.<br>
그 말은 스스로 존중받을 수 있도록 행동하라는 뜻도 되고, 동양 사람은 스스로를 낮추고 상대를 존중함으로써 스스로도 존중받을 수 있기를 기대하는 반면, 스스로가 존중받아야 할 존재라는 것에 촛점을 맞춘 것이라고 합니다.</p>
<p><em><strong>OSM의 울타리가 서양에 치우쳐 있는 점, 그리고 우리가 우리 울타리 안에만 갇혀 있는 이 두 가지 문제를 풀기 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?</strong></em></p></div></div><div><br></div></div></div></body></html>
