having worked in the local business space for 5+ years, I know how hard it is

because of the interest in their story and so forth. Think of a map you would
buy if you are a tourist to the city – it would have landmarks (possibly
commercial ones too), but it would not have any ol’ common listing –
it clutters up the map, and can cause headaches down the road (businesses
threatening to sue because the name is wrong, threatening to sue because they
didn’t want to be listed, complaining about competitors, etc etc).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

with adding commercial POIs in a general-purpose map even if its significance
is not on a national-level.<br>

If you think that this will impact on possible advertising revenues from OSM
end-users, I don't think that the effect is significant.<br>
<br>
The valid point that you've raised is that it'll be harder to maintain this
data since businesses come and go, but I think some such data is useful and we
just need to strike a balance between comprehensiveness and maintainability.<br>
