Thanks Eugene and Michael for your replies,

I understand about staying away from manipulating the zoom properties. I agree.

Eugene, you got my point exactly on what I wish the renderers will do about low density POIs in an area. You say they can do this anyway for AOIs, I hope they will adapt the same algorithm for POIs soon. Meanwhile, I will look at look into this landuse=commercial approach.

Only problem I see with landuse=commercial is, one has to know the extents of the area and add them properly on OSM. Question ... can I just use a very small circle polygon to represent a "point" then tag it as building=yes or something? I saw this done for Boracay's Boat Stations ... http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=11.959316&lon=121.925667&zoom=18&layers=B000FTF

Thanks again

On Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 7:23 AM, Eugene Alvin Villar <seav80@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Ed,

It is usually not appropriate to add tags or to adjust the data to fix rendering problems. This is the problem of the renderer tool itself and not of the data. In this case, the renderer should be able to recognize that there are only two POIs in an area and so should show them in lower zoom levels. But as far as I know, no renderer (Mapnik, Osmarender, etc.) is sophisticated enough yet for this.

One possible thing you can do data-wise is to tag the resort as a landuse=commercial area (AOI?) even approximately instead of just as a POI. The current renderers are able to show areas and even display the name if the area is big enough.

Regards,
Eugene

On Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 10:27 AM, Ed Garcia <eppgarcia@gmail.com> wrote:
Hello Guys,

Is there a way, or is there a tag or property that I can use so that certain POIs (usually Resorts in my case siempre) can appear at lower zoom levels instead of just zoom = 17? There are cases kasi na there are only one or two resorts in a long stretch of beach. When zoomed out (to appreciate the vicinity), the resort would not appear. and then when zoomed in to see the resort, the vicinity can no longer be appreciated.

here is an example ...
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=13.8598&lon=121.509&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF Try zooming in to zoom=17 where the resorts will start to appear. By then the "vicinity orientation" is lost.

Is there a tag or property that can dictate zoom level visibility of the POI? This is usually the case in provincial areas where POIs are way far apart.

thanks!,
ed
