Hello everyone! I'm definitely an "armchair mapper" here, just trying to <br>
make maps in my general area a bit more accurate. (I'm mainly hoping <br>
that since the big mappers often get data from OSM, that if I fix the <br>
problems there eventually other maps won't be as likely to have my road <br>
in the wrong spot and stuff like that.)<br>
<br>
But, I thought I'd work on adding McKinstry Brook, which goes through my <br>
property. I tried tracing it from some combination of the USGS <br>
Topographic Map and the MassGIS 2019 Orthos (though some places it's <br>
pretty hard to see exactly where the stream is through the trees).<br>
<br>
So first, here's my changeset and I'd like some level of review that I <br>
didn't screw something up terribly:<br>

Secondly, after I did this I started looking at info on the McKinstry <br>
Brook Wildlife Management Area (to see if I might be able to improve <br>

to some sort of MassWildlife GIS map <br>

the data from that map is public-domain and could be used, and if so if <br>
there's some way to import the location of the brook (and if so, if it <br>
might be more accurate than what I tried to do tracing from imagery).<br>

MassGIS has a lot of data layers available. They are basically public<br>
domain, with some odd labeling as CC-BY in some places, but when asked<br>
it is public domain with attribution requested. It is polite to list<br>
MassGIS as source in your changeset comment when using MassGIS data. We<br>
are usually briefer than their listed form and just say "MassGIS<br>
layername" and leave out the "Commonwealth of Massachusetts EOTSS".<br>

There is also some USGS hydrography data. My very very hazy impression<br>
is that the MassGIS data is probably better.<br>

If you are comfortable munging python code and dealing with shapefiles,<br>
you can probably get to the point of using these sources. Probably JOSM<br>
can read shapefiles, in which case you could do this without coding. If<br>
you aren't using JOSM and you want to do this sort of editing, I suggest<br>
learning it.<br>
<br>
If you just want to add one stream that you are cross-checking with<br>
imagery and personal knoweldge, I'd say go for it and don't worry too<br>
much.<br>

If you start to think about "import all the streams in MA", that's an<br>
import, needs plan/discussion/approval and it's at least 10x harder than<br>
you think.<br>

I downloaded the hydro25k layer and looked at it in QGIS. It indeed<br>
looks useful. If you want to send me a private mail with a geo link to<br>
where you are I can see about pulling that one stream out of it into osm<br>
format for you, if that seems daunting to you (quite understandable).<br>

Hmm; while software engineering is my day job I've somehow managed to <br>
not pick up Python yet. I guess I was hoping that there was some easy <br>
way to import more MassGIS layers into the iD editor or into OSM <br>
directly. Having the L3 Parcel data and the 2019 Orthos right there in <br>
iD is pretty nice and easy. I was hoping somebody had just already <br>
developed a way to just copy a stream that's in MassGIS data over into <br>
OSM. If there's nothing already built, while it sounds like a fun <br>
project I'm unlikely to be able to dedicate the time to do it myself.<br>

Yeah, that's basically all I'm doing. I mean I know many of the road <br>
crossings for this stream, but it's not like I've walked along the <br>
entire length of the stream or anything like that. I guess I am just <br>
worrying too much.<br>

The hydro25karc file is my favorite layer for rivers because it has a <br>
name field. The main problem with it however is that the lines seem to <br>
be drawn, (in a recent area I checked), north to south rather than in <br>
the direction of actual flow. So it was a lot of extra work to check the <br>
topo map to find the proper flow direction.<br>
