By that I mean don’t forget to stop recording when you get home. I notice there are a number of people who record a trace then go home leave their GPS recording for the next couple of hours upload the trace and you end up with a ton of GPS drift. (Example <a href="https://imgur.com/gallery/oeKNvY5" class="">https://imgur.com/gallery/oeKNvY5</a>). If this does happen to you there is an easy way to fix this by using <a href="https://gpx.studio/" class=""><span style="color: rgb(220, 161, 13);" class="">https://gpx.studio/</span></a>, a free and really simple to use online GPX editor, to crop your trace.</div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; min-height: 14px;" class=""><br class=""></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue";" class="">Next for devices I have tested iPhones/Androids using different applications GoMap, OSMand, and Strava. All of these are sufficient for recording GPX data. As Hobbit pointed out OSMand is nice because it has the most customizible settings like recording points at different intervals. </div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; min-height: 14px;" class=""><br class=""></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue";" class="">In my opinion any Garmin device is far superior to a phone... like way better. I have an Etrex, but only find my self using it when I am out backpacking for a couple days at a time. For me this is just preference I find the Etrex a bit clunky if I am out on a day hike with friends in the woods. For more casual walks I like my Garmin watch (forerunner 245 or instinct solar) and not that it matters for OSM but the watch gives you heart rate data too if you are into tracking health related stats. The 10m class accuracy can be decreased further if you store the Etrex at the bottom of you back pack as well so try to keep it somewhere facing the sky or for the watch not under a thick jacket. The majority of my recordings come from my Edge 530 because 90% of the time I am riding my bike and it really helps to have it mounted in onto the bike facing the sky.</div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; min-height: 14px;" class=""><br class=""></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue";" class="">I sound a bit crazy saying this, but a while ago I did this mega comparison on a bike ride by strapping my iPhone to the bike frame, recoding on my Garmin Edge 530, wearing a Garmin instinct solar, a Garmin forerunner 245, and an Apple Watch series 3. Then overlaying the GPX files on top of each other and found that my edge 530 was the best. The Garmin watches had a bit of drift I think it was because of my arm moving but was only noticeable if you zoom in really close. The Apple Watch was not great and the iPhone just sucked compared to Garmin. </div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; min-height: 14px;" class=""><br class=""></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue";" class="">If you do get a Garmin device I would recommend changing the interval recording from smart to every second and to experiment with option to change GLONASS or Galileo GPS in your area both are great but Galileo can be a bitter better in cites. If your budget is $100 my go to place would be Craigslist you can find great deals there.</div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; min-height: 14px;" class=""><br class=""></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue";" class="">Something else worth noting is Stravas global heat map can be a fantastic resource for mapping in OSM. Side note you only get the high resolution heat map if you are paying for Strava. RTK gps is something I have not heard about until now so it was great Greg bought that up.
