I'll add another voice in favor of classification based primarily on importance and connectivity.  Trunk should just be the next level of importance below motorway.  In some areas where expressways are common I'm sure trunk == expressway makes sense.  However, there are many rural areas in this country where expressways aren't a thing.  By limiting trunk to just expressways we lose a level of classification in these areas.  Trunk and primary are effectively one classification level if you want to make a map with the current data that doesn't look fragmented.<br></div>
