Just to add my tuppenyworth into the mix....

I don't object to donating money to the project from time-to-time (or even
setting up a standing order for a small regular donation) in order that
things like servers and so on can be purchased, the project can be promoted
and so on. I'm not sure about buying developer's time with it. I agree with
Imi's points regarding this.
