Nick Are you viewing this with Firefox? Firefox doesn't provide any way of panning or zooming an SVG file, so most of what your are interested would not be visible in Firefox as the initial view is only of the top left corner of the area.

and copied into data.xml (which is my default data file that osmarender expects) and it rendered fine using osm-map-features.xml. Coverage is portrait area from north of the motorways to south of Southampton Central station.
