I had created one way, named "the high street", and tagged it as
unclassified, then for the segments which were residential I tagged these as
abutters = residential, and the segments which were retail I tagged as
abutters = retail. This dispaled as a nice road, with one name on it, and
the abutterts coloured as needed.

Am I to understand this will not now display, and that to display the road I
will now have to create three ways, on e way tagged as highway =
residential, one tagged as highway = unclassified, and one tagged as highway
= retail (is this latter one even valid?)

Yes (unless you change the rule file - see comment on line 35 of osm-map-features.xml
).

The point is to discourage tagging of segments in favour of tagging ways. By making this the default behaviour of Osmarender it should help to reduce the amount of new segment tagging.

According to the stats the number of segments with tags has doubled in the last 3 months (from about 500,000 to over 1 million). This is not what should be happening. Since ways were introduced in April the number of tagged segments should not have grown very much at all.

So hopefully, by making it easier to get a result by tagging ways, this will slow down this undesirable trend.

Etienne
