I see on the diary that Morwen has done some work on rendering plaza, with highway=pedestrian but I'm not sure how it should be tagged?

Should it be a closed way with highway=pedestrian?

Does it need area=yes?

Yes to both.. I'm not terribly enamoured of the exact tagging. It has come in for criticism for some parties, but nontheless, it made it through Proposed_Features, and I've not seen any other concrete proposal tagging large pedestrianised areas.
