There is though some sense in it. A plaza is something you can use in your routing, you can walk over it in the shortest way possible, it is just a rather large and wide pedestrian road. Landuse things are more for colors and making things more clear about the position where you are at in my opinion

It has come in for criticism for some parties, but nontheless, it made it through Proposed_Features, and I've not seen any other concrete proposal tagging large pedestrianised areas.
