i am trying to rope in my brother-in-law to do mapping - he is quite
keen, but the type who takes years to make up his mind as to what
device to buy. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced device that
does logging, waypoints, has a display and can be used for navigation
also.

In general, Garmin devices are a good choice. Look for the models with a high-sensitivity receiver (in the eTrex series, they're the ones with the H in the name). I have a Vista HCx which is a nice, compact device. It can accept up to 2 GB microSD card for maps and for recording tracklogs. In the US, it's going for around $200 now I think. If you don't want the electronic compass or barometer, the Legend HCx is a good choice. You can convert OSM data to Garmin maps using mkgmap, and there's a recent project capable of creating routable Garmin maps from OSM data.
