I wonder: you use a wiki, could it be edited to propose
alternative icons and share the refinement burden ? Is it possible
to do so while keeping a common style?
Maybe the target would be to symplify the icons to obtain
legibility at small size, while keeping it as close as possible to
the original.
improvement. There are two big things that would increase the
odds of adoption for a set like this:

- Remove the containing boxes. The boxes hurt legibility because
every icon has the same silhouette, and also makes it difficult
for the icons to scale down well because the boxes occupy
unnecessary space.

- Ensure the icons are legible at small sizes. Right now,
there are many fine details that get lost when scaled down to
the size these would be displayed on the map at (>=20px x
20px). I would make an effort to reduce the dependency on
multiple symbols to get your concepts across. For example, why
is the chess board icon two people under a tent, beside a
chess board? This would work much better as a single symbol,
like a chess Rook or a simplified board.

Hi all,

a set of more than 1000 POI icons for OSM
maps and OSM editors has been released
today.

The main purpose of this icon set is
a) covering all OSM POI tags with at least
1000 occurrences according to TAGINFO
b) provision of the most common key-value
combinations for each icon
c) assignment of each icon to one or
multiple map feature groups

This icon set can be used for the following
purposes:
a) integration into existing or future OSM
editors
b) to display POIs on any OSM map

My hope is receiving some feedback from the
community in order to further improve this
icon set including the related metadata.

The icon set can be downloaded here: <a

Thank you very much in advance for your
feedback!
Cheers Markus
