<p>Perhaps use "trail_visibility" through the lifecycle of the path
as it changes from "being obvious on the ground" to "not being
there at all"?</p>

<p>Once it's definitely disappeared, I'd have no qualms about
deleting it altogether. Sometimes I update the tags on a path
before deleting it to something like "note=nothing on this
alignment any more". <br>

<p>If it's still visible on imagery, I'd be tempted to leave that
note there (without a highway tag) to stop someone retracing it.</p>
