It does at least make you log in to OSM. I share your experience. Typical <a href="http://maps.me" rel="noreferrer noreferrer" target="_blank">maps.me</a> edits are of low quality and <br>
frequently show a misuse of tags, certainly not following to our <br>
community standards.<br>

I have a very low response rate on comments. Probaly one out of hundred <br>
responds. And I have not seen them going back to fix their edits ever.<br>
<br>
I think OSM API should block edits until email address is confirmed.<br>
And probably re-check the response to emails once a year or switch the <br>
account into read-only mode.<br>
Participating in changeset discussions or using osm messaging could <br>
reset that counter as well.<br>
