Practically, replication is typical for all object types. While replications in different object classes may be correct, even necessary (e.g. holes in global ocean and rivers, in overlaps), inside the same object type (like buildings, lakes, rivers and so on) should be understood as errors. There are several replication types within the same object type like exact, corridor, partial... replication, just to mention some. Corridor replication happens when the model/geometry of one object is inside a narrow border corridor area of another object. Let me present some replication figures from one of my OSM data preparation protocols from some years ago (this preparation on OSM dumps was performed regularly, at least once a month, in many, many years):

Exact and corridor replicated buildings 67159 and 29450 consecutively. The same numbers for lakes are 20369 and 19500.

IMO, it is illusory to expect manual or editor based correction of these replications in OSM. Replications are not critical, or show stopper, errors, even rarely viewable in maps, however they have considerable data quality and size impact on the user side. Therefor, replications should be handled by OSM users in their data preparation procedures.

Regards, Sandor.

Sent from Mail for Windows 10
