This follows on from the thread node http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/accessibility/2010-November/000171.html .

Looking at Taginfo (http://taginfo.openstreetmap.de/keys/barrier#values), a couple of existing values include 'guard_rail' (205 instances), 'log' (27 instances), 'railing' (25 instances) and 'guardrail' (11 instances).  I've been searching a bit for an official term for the feature you've illustrated, without success so far.  Maybe consider 'barrier=log' for the specific illustrated feature?  This would indicate that the feature is not present just to accomodate accessibility needs, but would be a barrier feature indicating the path which should be taken, to discourage straying by all.
