At SotM 11 we had a BoF informal meet-up outside. I took some rough notes.
It would be good if someone could clean them up, then they can be sent to
the talk list as there weren't many people there.

Need to know use cases
Define our audiences
Personas
Do seasoned users go to the homepage (only for the map, could have
maps.osm.org)
There should be a map on the homepage but not the homepage being a map.
Statistics, what can we collect?
Promote things on the homepage, community links. Newly mapped example
features as the map.
Compeition implies a winner, we don't want to imply that (it's stages and
adaptations)
1st round: submit mockups/explanations to show your ideas
then voting/commenting so the leading ideas come through
don't throw away full ideas, maybe take aspects from each
2nd round: fuller implementation (EWG taking mockups and communication
between designers/developers)
Have a panel of experts, Muki, Peter Webber?
Need objective data, like eye tracking
Need measurable metrics for the design, to evaluate success 4 months after
changing the homepage
Get the community very involved in Round 0: creating a design brief.
Ask a survey. What do you want on osm.org % of how much you want it
Round 1, answer every question in the brief with why you answered it in
your design or if you skipped it
The homepage is also about people outside the community
More than just involving the community
Why aren't there more people in this group?
Editors: Look at the list of things that need doing. From the eye-tracking
research.
We need more people coding on editors
Editor in HTML5? Definetly worth doing.
 Compiling flash
install instructions fixed on the wiki
Any stomach for changing the cartography
yes.
 Comic Sans - that's a great idea
Default render has too much pressure on it
unlike MapQuest/Google, we have infinate layers
We want to see our edits appear though
Dynamic POI layer?
Cookie to save your favourite style
Default map has to be more detailed, distinct from all the other online
maps
Logo change worked well, little incremental changes
Look at other country sites and what we think of them
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Country_OSM_Sites
 Action points
Find briefs from other projects
Can we get stats from Grant/Matt
Officially involve Muki and friends (Peter Webber)
Have an IRC chat to pin down actions to do
