Gone quiet on this discussion, but we' need to move forward with something pragmatic. SOTM.US is 5 weeks away, and the main SOTM sign-up is now open. CWG has heard from the SOTM organisers about having a banner on there now. They've been meeting to discuss it, and even sent banner graphics to the sysadmins I believe.
I'm not really sure why we haven't heard from these SOTM.US or SOTM organisers on this list. I imagine they're just quietly annoyed with me for suggesting they can't have banners :-)
I *can* see their point of view though. They are busily trying to promote their events. Hard work, and they're doing an awesome job. Having a banner on the osm.org front page does help with that. It's not just to about making potential attendees aware (as Kai points out, that target group are rather a minority) but also showing that the event is a big deal, and attracting sponsors. It's the time of year when organisers start getting nervous about these things. I don't want to make their lives harder.
So we could just have the main SOTM banner, similar size to previous years ...but then what about SOTM.US?
As we're now in the weeks running up to SOTM.US it makes sense to me (kind of) to let them have a banner (3 months in advance was too much, but maybe now) But obviously we've got a clashing situation now. The main SOTM wants to start having their banner. Do we want *two* small banners? Strips above eachother, or side-by-side somehow? Bit messy, but I think that could work for a few weeks.
