[Openstreetmap-dev] Duplicate nodes policy?

Just realised that osm-editor is uploading more nodes than it needs to OSM. 
The way it works currently is that when you create a segment, it simply 
allocates two nodes and a segment between them. It does not check for 
duplicate nodes. In other words, a node between two segments will be 
duplicated.

So if you have three segments AB, BC, CD and four nodes A, B, C and D:

A----B----C-----D

two copies of B and C will be uploaded.

Does OSM server-side do anything about this (or is the intention to do this) 
or is it clients' responsibility?
