[Openstreetmap-dev] likelihood of getting street segments out of the api?

hello,

if i'm missing something obvious, misparsing 
http://www.openstreetmap.org/wiki/index.php/REST
or making the usual excessive demands on open-source, freetime
projects, then please ignore me. 

but there's still no way of getting lines / street segments in the
form of raw data out of OSM; calls to 'map?bbox=' in the API still
return "<osm version='0.2'/>", in bounding boxes where i know i've
created a lot of line segments in the past myself. 

is this broken, or not-yet-implemented? (i'm happy to volunteer for a
test / debug cycle...) or is being able to share and syndicate vector
data not really on the roadmap?
