Providing bad examples does not prove unusefullness. It proves only that
XML is not usefull EVERYwhere.
I bet that bad examples can be provided for every single thing, since I
believe there is nothing that fits ALL needes.

For reasoning about this, there was a thread some month ago in this list.
To summarize, GPX can not give all things OSM should provide without
extending it to a point, where it could not be called "GPX" without our
nose increasing by several inches each time we mention that.

I don't understand what you mean.. ?
All we need is a simple, easy but good enough way to transfer data from A
to B. "Parameter to XMLRPC" was dropped before I joined OSM for some
reason and "REST and GPX" is not really sufficient and get too clumsy if
extended too much, so the idea was to use a simple "REST and own XML
format".
