If someone interested i'm doing the same work on gentoo distribution and wrote
an ebuild... it uses subversion eclass utils so it will install all
dependency, automagically do svn checkout/update from svn.openstreetmap.org,
will compile the applet, apply sed to some configuration file, instal all in
a gentoo-style fashion and instruct the user to do some final
postconfiguration steps...
i'will write a wiki page in the next days...

I'm yet not tried it yet, if someone can post some basic instructions it will
be faster, and the ebuild complete :)))
