I'm truely sorry that I'm so gravely misinformed.  Where are these 
properties for ways stored, and how do I manipulate them?  What is 
the number of way objects that exist today?  The wiki page 
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Stats only says that the 
database (as of February 19) contains 447800 nodes and 440143 line 
segments.  Perhaps it should also tell the number of ways?

I'm pretty sure there are no way objects for Sweden, so I have a 
lot of catching up to do.  I made 23,000 edits in the past month, 
and not a single one was for way attributes.
