[OSM-dev] CGI on the dev server?

Hello everyone,

Has anyone successfully run scripts in CGI mode on the dev server? I ask as I 
think I can get the Ruby version of the renderer to work under CGI; I have 
tried it on the free-map.org.uk server. Only problem there is the 
free-map.org.uk server (128MB Bytemark virtual machine; runs the PHP renderer 
fine) seems to run it too slow, in contrast to the dev server.

I've tried putting scripts in ~nick/public_html/cgi-bin 
and /var/www/nick/cgi-bin but Apache won't run them, either with a .rb 
extension or with a .cgi extension. I can't find anything 
in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf about cgi-bin directories.
