I tried wget from the dev box, and that worked. It's obviously a 'from the 
dev box to the dev box' issue though, as the compositer will contact the 
tile box fine.

On another tack, progress on the Ruby version of the renderer is going 
quite well. I'm getting some quite nice antialiasing, though I have some 
strange issues with fonts.
