Mapstraction just sits on top of Google Maps, Yahoo Maps and Microsoft
Virtual Earth and doesn't implement any functionality of its own to
speak of (OK, it does polylines and basic projection itself, but
that's all).

I would ignore Mapstraction for now if I were you and code the
functionality you need yourself.

OpenLayers might implement more things you can use right now though,
it's well worth a look.
