[OSM-dev] Mapnik and OSM - the way forward

Afaik, this is in the works. There's a new tile machine being set up, on which the mapnik system will be installed.
That will be fielding live requests, perhaps as a backend to MetaCarta's WMS-C http://labs.metacarta.com/wms-c/

There will be another process invalidating tiles based on edits, probably in batch once per day.

The plan is totally to document everything, so then everyone can start hacking away at the slippy map suggestions.
Though Artem is only one guy (even though the quality of Mapnik suggests several people busy at work),
so I reckon we'll need to sit tight until he gets some free time.

Subject: [OSM-dev] Mapnik and OSM - the way forward

Hello Artem,

I think it's fair to say that the new Mapnik-based renderer is very
impressive. It would be good to take it forward now and integrate it with
the OSM tile rendering system, so that it can be used on the live
database. Are you able to document (either on the list or on the wiki) the
procedure you went through to generate the tiles, so that it can be tried
out on the dev server in preparation for going fully live?

Thanks,
Nick
