I use Nick Whitelegg's UK-only planet for testing Potlatch (believe it  
or not, Potlatch does get tested, though it may not show ;) ). It  
gives the required density of data without having to spend ten years  
importing it.

To do the actual import, I use a version of planet2mysql.pl with all  
the dependencies stripped out. Slow but it works. I'll put it in svn  
at some point.
