[OSM-dev] OSM Servers / what do www and db do?

Hi,

   seeing that the database runs on db.openstreetmap.org and the
webserver is www.openstreetmap.org, how do they interact?

Does the ruby code run on www and access the database on db over the
network, or does the ruby code run on db and there's a ProxyPass on
www for stuff handled by ruby?
