[OSM-dev] Joining shapefiles?

Is anyone aware of a utility to join shapefiles? I ask as I would like to join 
together the SRTM shapefiles into a set of larger files, to make it easier 
for people to install the upcoming freemap at home client. (BTW Mapnik *is* easy 
to install - I got it, and its Boost dependencies, compiled and installed 
successfully on my somewhat ropey home box with no problems other than the 
need to upgrade libpng).
