I tried this with a propset for now. Can you have a look if this would work 
for the mappaint plugin. The result should be that you see the the same 
directory under the following two locations. And any of those editing write 
to the same svn location.
	svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/share/map-icons
	svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/editors/josm/plugins/mappaint/map-icons


More Icons

I also started merging the icons into  the new structure. This was to give 
anyone else (not only Ulf) a starting point for drawing/combining more icons 
for openstreetmap (and gpsdrive ;-).
So I'm calling (as I already did on the gpsdrive Mailinglist) for some busy 
designers. Everyone, who is interested in how our maps looks. As you can see 
there are already some icons collected and/or drawn. You can see a little 
overview at:

Your task is to fill in and add new icons to one (or all) icon schemes. 
For the artists inside our community: Just start drawing shiny new 
License conform icons. 
Even for those of us not so talented in drawing it is not too hard. 
All you need is a good (BSD-, PD-, GPL-, CC-licensed or similar) icon source. 
One example would be :
        http://openclipart.org/
on debian for example: 
        apt-get install openclipart.*
And then you reduce/combine existing ones to new icons suitable for 
Navigation.

Would be great to read from you and get thousands of new useful Map-Icons.
