[OSM-dev] ncn (or motorway) ref numbers in osmarender

Does anyone know of any tricks to draw a box, or potentially a symbol,
around text in osmarender?
I would like to draw the ref number in, for example, white text in a blue
box, similar to the way motorway route numbers are shown on a conventional
street map.
It seems that the text element can have various css styles, but I'm unable
to find detailed documentation about what styles are accepted. I'm also not
sure if the text element has a bounding box that could be rendered (as a
background or border for example).
Also (slightly aside) recently there was mention of australian motorways
having 'shield' symbols in different colours. Is it possible to define a
symbol in osmarender and attach it to a way element, to display behind the
ref text? that would be a neat solution as it would allow for symbols such
as a rectangle with rounded corners, etc.
Thanks for any tips.
mike
