I'd guess so, or change/remove the reprojection in osm2pgsql so that you
don't have to reproject the data when you use it. That is the reason why
it currently uses mercator since this is closest to what Mapnik wants
when render the slippy map tiles.

As I mentioned before, if you want to keep the DB data in latlong you
can apply some minor changes like the attached patch.
