I noticed this before with landsat imagery, but with the new yahoo
imagery this gets annoying:
If you don't match the resolution of the yahoo imagery with your JOSM
zoom (i.e. you have zoomed out just a tad bit too much, the image
resolution is reduced to screen resolution at the current JOSM zoom.
i.e. if the downloaded imagery has a resolution of 1 m per pixel and you
have zoomed out so the small scale display top left shows 200m, then you
will lose 3/4 of the image information (or halve the available resolution)

I have an example image up at http://www.deelkar.net/osm/WMS_plugin.png
the left shows the imported image in JOSM the right the original Data as
displayed in the spawned firefox.

josm-latest 203
WMS Plugin version: 2.5 (According to WMS->help)
YWMS - the one that displays copyright information

Current workaround: zoom in slightly farther so the downloaded imagery
area is slightly smaller than the editing area would be at image resolution.
i.e. if the downloaded imagery has a resolution of 1 m per pixel zoom in
JOSM so that one pixel of editing area is representing 1 m or more.
(i.e. the 100 px scale display shows 100 m or less)

It would be nice if there was a way to not reduce the resolution of the
image to the screen resolution of JOSM.
