OpenID isn't a way to unify passwords across different systems. It's a
whole new way to log in to web sites that replaces usernames and
passwords entirely. I think that it is likely to become very popular -
already millions of AOL/AIM/Netscape Online etc. users can use it
with their existing accounts, and other services can only add to that list.

I think even if we do impliment an LDAP (or just an SQL) unified
username backend, we'd still want to impliment OpenID login in the long
term, so why not skip the middle part.
