It isn't supposed to work any way at the moment.

Richard thought escaping was done with the ;;;/=== scheme so put that
in Potlatch but in fact nothing else was doing that. Plus it turns out
to have edge cases that it can't cope with.

I have a patch in my inbox to do escaping using a new scheme that will
probably get put in fairly soon - it was on the list last week as part
of this thread.
