Cool, I didn't know if it applied diffs directly or not, I hadn't gotten 
around to asking yet :-)

The hourly diffs are (obviously) much smaller than the daily diffs which 
should help somewhat.  Uncompressed they appear to be under 50MB.

These diffs are now created by osmosis itself rather than using external 
shell scripts.  As a result I can vary the interval anywhere down to one 
second granularity with a simple config file update, so if smaller files 
help it is easy to achieve.
