Hmm, I don't know.  Spaetz just upgraded osmosis to the latest version 
and made some changes to the daily script to provide a 
daily.latest.osc.bz2 symlink to the latest daily diff.  The 
http://planet.openstreetmap.org/daily.latest.osc.bz2/ url now points 
back to the contents of http://planet.openstreetmap.org/ which seems 
dodgy.  Might be a bug in the script somewhere.
