As part of a new namefinder (not completed yet), I've written a custom 
database in C(++). That part is already finished and works fine. The 
whole database (containing more information than you need) is about 8GB 
for the current planet dump. Import takes ~3.5 hours, no diff support 
yet (and probably not in the near future, as I've got other work to do).
Perhaps a stripped-down version of that would suit your needs? The node 
data is only about 3G and if you stop processing at the first way it 
should complete in under two hours.
