Of course there's nothing to say against including a Java 1.6 build of 
JOSM for a distribution that has 1.6 included. That's completely up to 
the packager.

We'll remain on 1.5 source level for a while I guess, so as to not cause 
more problems for users with ancient machines than necessary. But with 
the proper compiler switches, building under 1.6 should be trivial; I 
know because some people *accidentally* compile under 1.6 ;-)
