A good chunk of the fens is below sea level but it's all drained (by the
Dutch originally) and the water pumped up and out so it's usable
agricultural land. A few areas between the main drainage channels are
designed to flood each year during the winter months. The Welney area
particularly and the A1101 is usually impassable for a few weeks over the
winter. The RSPB has a major reserve at Welney (well worth a visit btw) and
have something interesting to say about the flooding with respect to
wildfowl:
